He disbelieved me and we bet a pint so I had to take a look a little further&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I found the genome data published (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/nuccore\/MN908947.3?fbclid=IwAR0OaPrZBBjfIgbloWkxSY_AuCWRgJqmxTg4hGf7m9SFalzXg3Xw4Naso8c\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/nuccore\/MN908947.3<\/a>), and thought it would be fun to visualise the data as an image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:25% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"173\" height=\"173\" src=\"https:\/\/mapflaps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/corona-rna.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-505 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mapflaps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/corona-rna.png 173w, https:\/\/mapflaps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/corona-rna-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 173px) 100vw, 173px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Here it is! 29,811 pixels representing the 4 different nucleotides which I coloured, (A)adenine = white, (C)cytosine = red, (G)guanine = green, (T)thymine = blue.<br>All of the data for covid in an image 173&#215;173 pixels of 4 colours&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve also learnt that covid uses compression for its rna, (as does the human dna) similar idea to JPEG\u2019s <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"16\" width=\"16\" alt=\"\ud83d\ude43\" src=\"https:\/\/static.xx.fbcdn.net\/images\/emoji.php\/v9\/t26\/1.5\/16\/1f643.png\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s markers which specify how to unpack and interpret the code, like headers in computer code!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was going to make an image of the human genome for comparison but yeah, the download for the raw data was &gt;900GB&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would be cool if we could use machine learning to reverse engineer the compression.. it\u2019ll be far superior to any jpeg <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"16\" width=\"16\" alt=\"\ud83d\ude42\" src=\"https:\/\/static.xx.fbcdn.net\/images\/emoji.php\/v9\/ta5\/1.5\/16\/1f642.png\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"409\" src=\"https:\/\/mapflaps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/escher-repro2-800x409.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1004 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mapflaps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/escher-repro2-800x409.png 800w, https:\/\/mapflaps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/escher-repro2-300x153.png 300w, https:\/\/mapflaps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/escher-repro2-768x392.png 768w, https:\/\/mapflaps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/escher-repro2-500x255.png 500w, https:\/\/mapflaps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/escher-repro2.png 1175w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Also whilst in lockdown, I joined a facebook group called &#8216;Recreate artworks with things you find at home&#8217;, and enjoyed contributing my own Escher piece!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I heard that the sars covid-19 genome has around 30k nucleotides and mentioned to a friend that therefore you could fit the entire covid RNA data onto an old floppy disk!
