Beauticious is a painting with discreet projected animations. Designed to create a moment of confusion in the viewer whilst they decode what they’re seeing. It’s also aesthetically pleasing and interesting to watch.

Beauticious

The Rose Hill is an inspiring local independent venue run by inspiring artists and musicians. I’ve been fortunate enough to be involved in various functions and happenings over the years which is also great because they are just around the corner from me!
There’s a painting in the Rose Hill that belongs to the owner and used to be her Grandma’s; Using my own projection mapping software (MapFlaps) running on a Raspberry Pi, I took a photo of this painting, made some subtle (and not so subtle) animations and then re-project this animation back over the painting.

Serendipitously, because of multiple factors: the environment and position; the painting itself; the piece works especially well – the projector can be hidden easily to one side of the painting (a major function of MapFlaps); and the painting itself is great – slightly ambiguous and subtle!

Projecting over the top of an existing image has a big advantage – it’s impossible to take away light with a projector, so being able to use the existing tones on the painting help create a unique feel and manages to confuse the brain.

I enjoy watching when people when they catch some movement on it and do a double take to try to figure what they’re seeing!
